The second tell Macbeth that he cannot be slain by anyone that was born of a woman and the third tells Macbeth that his end will come when Great Birnam Wood moves to Dunsinane. The severed head foreshadows Macbeth’s own end at the hands of Macduff. They show him three apparitions: the first is a severed head that tells Macbeth to “Beware Macduff!”. Through this dramatic irony, we realise that Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are lying to each other and we witness their relationship begin to fall apart.ĭriven by ambition, Macbeth seeks out the witches to find out his future. Despite her show of leadership, we know that Lady Macbeth is beginning to feel guilty about the murder of Duncan. Lady Macbeth keeps calm and tells the guests that this is normal, that Macbeth has a condition. Banquo’s ghost haunts Macbeth, he is driven mad by the sight of the ghost and starts to breakdown in front of his guests. The murderers kill Banquo but fail to murder Fleance. Macbeth lies to Lady Macbeth and tells her that Banquo will be joining them later. Macbeth plots to have Banquo and his son Fleance murdered (they also received a prophecy that Banquo’s sons would rule Scotland). ![]() The old man tells Ross all of the things that are wrong with the natural world – showing the audience that the Great Chain of Being has been broken and the natural order of the world is in a state of chaos. The other characters suggest Donaldbain and Malcolm only fled because they had something to hide. This is a reasonably accurate metaphor for the evil going on in Macbeth’s castle. Macbeth murders Duncan and claims the throne for himself after Duncan’s two sons flee. Shakespeare open the act with some comic relief in the form of the porter, who jokes that he guards the gates to hell. Lady Macbeth is just as ambitious as her husband and encourages him to murder the king – Duncan – in the turning point of the play. In accordance with the prophecies, Macbeth is given the title Thane of Cawdor. The witches give Macbeth prophecies: that he will be made Thane of Cawdor and King of Scotland. ![]() The Captain tells of how valiant and heroic Macbeth is in battle. The witches meet up, share stories of the trouble they have been causing mortals and plan to meet Macbeth.
